Main Purpose

 

This position’s main purpose is to deliver high-impact and well architected solutions to challenging scientific computing problems, mainly in the areas of genomics and metabolomics pipelines and
define the bioinformatics / cheminformatics strategy of the Scientific Computing Drug Discovery group. The position will act as a coordinator cross teams and align the efforts of the application development, data products and automation team with respect to the bioinformatics / cheminformatics domain.
 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Define the bio-informatics strategy
  • Coordinate with external vendors and integrate external products
  • Drive bio-/cheminformatics projects and take care that the outcome results in a high impact for research
  • Identify and elaborate functional needs directly with your collaborators using their language and at their level (bench + data scientists)
  • Translate domain specific functional requirements into system designs that are consistent with the application landscape and the informatics strategy at Idorsia
  • Develop modern (often cloud native) software solutions to solve the specific needs while balancing cost effectiveness, simplicity and maintainability
  • Deploy and maintain and these systems using IaC (eg. terraform)
  • Maintain a sense of ownership of your applications, providing responsive support directly to your users including training them in the use of your tools
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary IT related software projects
  • Participate in professional development and the scientific community through conferences, academic publishing, and open source software contributions as appropriate
  • Contribute to technical collaborations with external software engineers and scientists

 

Candidate’s Requirements

 

  • Master or PhD in life or computer sciences (or equivalent industry experience)
  • 5+ years of experience in Scientific Computing Drug Discovery in a pharma research environment
  • Knowledge in at least one bioinformatics domain: Immunology, Genomics, Proteomics, Metabolomics
  • Basic understanding of data backends (e.g. REST, SQL, NOSQL, S3)
  • Professional software development skills & proficiency in 2 of: Java, Python, R, Bash -> code comprehension, design patterns, algorithms, data structures
  • Version control + dependency management (e.g. Git, Maven, Conda, Docker)
  • Familiarity with some modern data processing and machine learning libraries (Spark, Keras/Tensorflow, Numpy/Pandas/Sklearn, Tidyverse)
  • Experience or willingness to learn modern cloud computing (12 factors, serverless, managed services, IaC)
  • Good soft skills: pragmatic, strategic, motivated, reliable, and cooperative
  • Fluent in English
