We are seeking a motivated Scientific Associate for a 9-month temporary position starting as soon as possible (replacement maternity leave).

Job Responsibilities


  • Prepare primary cultures of brain cells (microglia/astrocytes, neurons) 
  • Characterize in vitro cellular systems in terms of cell type markers and target expression, at the mRNA and protein levels (qRT-PCR, Western blot, Immunocytochemistry, FACS)
  • Perform viability and functional assays on brain primary cultures and cell lines (e.g. microglia migration, phagocytosis, cytokine release) to evaluate the potential of compounds 
  • Set up new in vitro models of neurodegeneration/neuroinflammation and related efficacy read-out depending on the project needs
  • Contribute to basic monitoring of mice and rats enrolled in pharmacological study (body weight measurement, disease scoring)
  • Sample biological fluids (CSF, blood) and tissues (brain, spinal cord, nerve, muscle) from rodents and perform biochemical analyses via different analytical methods (e.g., FACS, Western blot, Immunohistochemistry)
  • Responsible for the efficient planning, analysis and documentation of experiments in a multidisciplinary environment; writing of internal scientific reports
  • Communicate research findings internally and closely collaborating with other groups
  • Literature search for the setup of relevant experimental methods and optimization of existing protocols.
  • Supervise breeding of transgenic mouse/rat colonies


Candidate’s Requirements 


  • Bachelor or Master degree in Science (Biology/Pharmacology/Biochemistry), ideally with additional knowledge in Neuroscience; candidates holding a PhD will generally not be considered 
  • Extensive experience in isolation of cell populations from the CNS, cell culture, cellular assays, ideally in the field of neurodegeneration/neuroinflammation
  • Strong expertise in ex vivo analysis (gene expression, WB, ICC, FACS)
  • Recognized as an animal experimenter (LTK1 or equivalent)
  • Practical work experience in the field of neurodegeneration of  > 3 years, preferably in an industrial setting 
  • Hands-on experience in necropsy including brain (microdissection of brain regions), spinal cord, muscle sampling but also in animal dosing (oral gavage, subcutaneous, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, intravenous injections) would be an advantage. 
  • Ability to plan, methodically perform, carefully analyze, accurately document experiments and present results
  • Scientifically curious, willingness to learn new techniques and skills
  • Flexible and committed to work
  • Excellent knowledge of English (verbal and written)
